The sprawling home that was to be the cornerstone of the Nature's Walk gated community has been seized and its contents removed. The North Grenville Times reports TD Bank began foreclosure proceedings on a $600,000 mortgage on the home of Tom Assaly last November. Assaly and his wife are reportedly living in Florida while a project management company looks after their former Kemptville home. According to the Times, a security guard removed a man from the garage on the premises in recent weeks. A court-appointed receiver will be looking after the recovery of assets from Assaly's four companies in order to obtain some return for investors.

Several first-year med students are in town this week as part of The Eastern Regional Medical Education Program - a non-profit program funded by the Ministry of Health and Long Term Care. Each year the ERMEP sends a group of first year medical students out to experience life and work in rural communities. Local physicians and their staff donate their time and in some areas, the medical students are able to contribute by speaking to area high school students about their experience pursuing medicine as a career. In North Grenville, the students are billeted at local homes, they get a free membership to the gym and the Chamber of Commerce welcomes medical students to the area through receptions at Business After Hours events.

No More Fines for Parking in Mayor's Spot

North Grenville Mayor David Gordon has sent a memo to staff so that no one is ever again ticketed for using his parking spot. A letter to the editor in last week's edition of the Kemptville Advance/EMC complained about an elderly woman receiving a parking ticket for using the Mayor's spot. The author of the letter, Steve Corkery of Oxford Mills, wrote that his mother only used the Mayor's parking space because all of the handicapped spots, for which she has a permit, were full. The bylaw officer wasn't willing to cancel the ticket, but upon learning of the fine, the Mayor took the matter into his own hands:

Mayor Gordon says if someone is in his space he will simply park elsewhere and walk across the lot; he needs the exercise anyway.

Watson Trying to Protect Rideau Carleton as Only Casino

Ottawa Mayor Jim Watson is under fire by city columnists who say he waited too long to step in and protect the Rideau Carleton Raceway in Osgoode as the only site for a casino. Watson says he had the RCR's best interests at heart from the beginning, and he thought the OLG would consider it as a satellite location to a downtown casino. Tuesday Watson told his Finance & Economic Development Committee that he wants to restrict the bidding process.
