OPP Warn of Paving / Maintenance Scams

E-mail Print PDF

The OPP would like to remind you this is the time of year that a certain type of criminal becomes active. They usually work with three or four people in a paving or residential maintenance crew. They could be from another area of the province or country. They will do a good job for a fair price, then once the word has spread that they are reputable, the less than professional work comes into play. These criminals target older and vulnerable people. They are pushy and will go to great lengths to secure a job and payment before the work is completed. The OPP wants you to ask for a list of other satisfied customers in the area, along with a written estimate of work to be done. Get estimates from similar service providers in your area before making your decision. If you feel the people are trying to intimidate and put pressure on you, ask them to leave. Write down any information you can about their description, number of people, and the vehicles they are using, especially a licence plate, and report them to the OPP immediately.
